The Riddler massaged his forehead with two gloved fingers. His eyes were closed, yet he was still aware of the steady and still Batman. Not an easy riddle to discover. Only a few words to work with. It seemed it was out there just beyond his reach. As if the question god would not put it on his tongue.

However, he was the riddler and if he wouldn't receive, he would take, he'd beat it out of the spirits.

"The very thing I see before myself, Batman. Though standing in the light, enveloped in darkness..." He said softly.

"A secret is the answer to your riddle."

"A secret is the answer to your riddle."

Batman stood silent for a moment. Until the tension rised to the precise point.

"No."

He could tell the Riddler wasn't amused. He probably thought Batman was being a bad sport about the entire thing. However...

"You're wrong. A secret may be a liable answer and an easy way out, but it's not the answer to my riddle.", Batman stated.

He looked at Riddler, dead in the eyes between his purple domino mask.

"The answer is the very thing I see before myself. Your obsession. Your compulsion. The very thing that you've seemingly built your life upon. Why, I'll probably never know. But in short, Riddler..."

Batman narrowed his own eyes, as if he were staring at Riddler's soul, and devouring it as he spoke.

"The answer to the riddle... is a riddle."

"No....NO..NO! NO!" The anger on his face was complete. His cheeks were flushed. His teeth were gritted together. He buried his face into the podium to muffle his screams of internal rage.

He failed.

He was nothing.

Just like father said.

Just like that.

He was not anything....The Riddler was dead

He grabbed the lever suddenly. If you could have seen his knuckles you know they were as white as snow. But, he pulled it slowly and the fallen hero, Spider-Man, lowered gently.

While Batman watched further, The Riddler grabbed the harness wrapped around spidey and guided it over to the floor. Slightly shaking he started taking off the restraints his eyes only half open, to hide the glassy appearance.

A bola flew through the air, wrapping around Riddler's frail and shaken body, as Batman clicked his utility belt back around his waist.

He had done it. It was a risk, but he had managed to save Parker. And Riddler had kept his word, ontop of that. Pushing the Riddler away, Batman turned to Spider-Man as he regained concsiousness.

"You're lucky I know a thing or two about ironies.", He stated, as Spider-Man woke.

"I...I...have one last riddle for you, Batman." He said finally after a long silence, watching him bring Spidey back to consciousness. He received no answer so he went on.

"A "Wise King" devised a contest to see who would receive the Princess hand in marriage.

The Princess was put in a 50x50 foot carpeted room. Each of her four suitors were put in one corner of the room with a small box to stand on. The first one to touch the Princess hand would be the winner and become the new King.

The rules of the test were that the contestants could not walk over the carpet, cross the plane of the carpet, or hang from anything; nor could they use anything but their body and wits (i.e. no magic or telepathy, nor any items such as ladders, block and tackles, etc.).

One suitor figured out a way and married the Princess and became the new King.

How did he figure it out?"
He said weakly.

Batman thought for a moment. Eventually, He looked back up at Riddler.

"He asked her to come to him.", Batman answered.

The Riddler's madness could finally be over. It was offical. Batman had truly returned.

He remained silent. He gave the Bat a simple nod. He didn't know it, but he had earned, if it meant anything, the respect of a madman.

Edward Nigma didn't speak for a long time to come.

"Hey..." Spider-Man groaned, still feeling the effects of the gas in his system.

"Is that who I think it is?" He weakly asked, pointing at the green terrorist.

"He's the Riddler." Batman stated, glaring in the same direction.

Spider-Man started walking towards Riddler, who was still in shock from his defeat.

"You killed all those people..." Spider-Man pronounced in a low but angry tone.

"I..." The Riddler started.

SLAM!!!

A right hook, straight to Riddler's face, caused a flurry of blood to flow from Riddler's nose and for him to land several feet back.

The dyeing words of the Riddler as he entered a tomb in the mind of Mr. Nigma

????
Enough to beat you.....
????

"I was also true to my word.." he said spitting out a blob of blood.

Batman watched as Riddler's blood stained apart of the stage beside him. He said nothing. Even though, under any other circumstances, He would've stopped Spider-Man... In a way, Parker had earned the privilege. While Batman had been the one to eventually save him and solve the final riddle, Spider-Man had solved the majority of them throughout the night, while Batman re-established himself in Gotham City.

Batman looked back, hearing police sirens from afar.

"We should leave. I doubt the police would be obliged, considering you're a hated vigilante from New York, and I'm... a vigilante in general., Batman said, taking out his grapple gun and firing at the celing.

He looked back at Spider-Man, as The Riddler blurted out his final message.

"Ignore him. Let it go. The people he killed will get their due justice when he's prosecuted for his crimes.", Batman stated, knowing Parker still wanted revenge for what happened.

Peter glared through the mask at the laying madman, blubbering with a reddened face.

He stood tall and held his fist up, about to bring a massive punch.

Batman stared on, afraid of what his associate would do.

THWIP!!! He shot a web instead, fastening Riddler to the ground, stopping him from moving.

"Not nice is it?" He sneered before shooting another web-line and began climbing up it and made his escape.
